The coal mining town of Leigh Creek with its many services is the ideal base to explore the rugged Flinders and Gammon Ranges. Despite its arid surroundings, the abundance of native trees and shrubs within Leigh Creek gives it a reputation as a desert oasis.
A top spot is Aroona Dam, the perfect place to spend an afternoon, with BBQs provided to cook lunch.
Around 4 million tonnes of coal is delivered each year to the Augusta Power stations. The 2.85 km long, 161 wagon train carrying about 10,000 tonnes covers the 270 km journey from Leigh Creek six times a week.
You can drive or take a day tour from Leigh Creek and explore the historical Farina township ruins and cemetery via Lyndhurst.
The scenery is spectacular on a visit to Arkaroola and is a day to remember. You can drive (rough road) or take a tour.
A range of accommodation is available within Leigh Creek, including motel units, self contained cabins and powered caravan and camping sites.
The supermarket and service station are convenient for restocking and refueling before heading off to explore the Oodnadatta, Strezlecki and Birdsville Tracks.
