Most people love the seaside and visitors and locals alike flock to Adelaide’s magnificent beaches in summer - white sands and tranquil water. The numerous cafes, gourmet food bars, hotels and restaurants with entertainment and shopping nearby is well patronised.
The jetty at Brighton, is a favourite spot especially in summer. The relaxed lifestyle and proximity to the city makes Brighton a popular seaside destination.
Brighton's Jetty Road, leading off the Esplanade opposite the jetty, has a number of cafes, galleries, clothing boutiques and craft shops worth visiting.
A self guided heritage walk at Brighton passes houses of interest and points of interest. For those who enjoy a further insight into South Australia's heritage, a detour into the local cemetery, takes in the graves of prominent South Australians such as Sir Douglas Mawson famous for his Antartic explorations.
A little further south, the Seacliff Beach with its sweeping sands, also enjoys popularity with swimmers and water sports. For many years a large impressive concrete rotunda overlooked the beach. It was destroyed by storms which also damaged several jetties.
The next beach along the southern coast is Marino rocks, also a good swimming beach. The rocks house a number of small mud crabs which are a delight to children. On the cliffs above, Kingston Park has superb coastal views. Tjilbruke Monument marks an Aboriginal heritage site here. The cliff face is significant as it is a last remnant of the coastal indiginous plants.
