Exploring Australia

Welcome to

Littlehampton, Adelaide Hills

Littlehampton is a small hamlet,  just 5kms from Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills, the hub of the hills shopping and business centre. In Littlehampton there are a number of dining outlets, retail and other businesses  in the main street.

Recently a huge land subdivision with stylish new houses has dramatically increased the town’s population.

Littlehampton is on the Princess Highway, once the main route between Adelaide and Melbourne, before the South Eastern Freeway was built. Today the Princess Highway is the scenic route to Murray Bridge, via the historic towns of Nairne, Kanmantoo and Callington. To the west Littlehampton connects to Balhannah via Junction Road and to Hahndorf via a summer unsealed back road through farmland.

Littlehampton was settled in the early days of the Colony. The town had its beginnings when the owners of three sections of land there (5008, 5010, 5011) each subdivided a portion of their properties. They were John Smith, surgeon of Blakiston; Thomas Biddles, farmer, Francis Robert Hunt, brewer and Benjamin Gray, brewer, all of Mount Barker. Littlehampton was named by Benjamin Gray after his home town in Sussex, England. A book by the folk at LittleHampton in Britain tells the story of a facinating family and what it was like in Engaland at that time – see the Benjamin Gray story.

The surrounding countryside is fertile and slightly undulating, A number of productive farms surrounded Littlehampton with dairying, grain and mixed farming agriculture.

Today there are several fine vineyards in the region as well as tourist attractions, market gardens, wholesale plant gardens and hobby farms. A number of bed and breakfast accommodation establishements provide guests with a peaceful environment with close access to major services and shops.
