Exploring Australia

Welcome to

Jabiru is the modern township in Kakadu National Park. It is host to the thousands of visitors who visit this world heritage-listed park each year and home to the Aboriginal community, Ranger Uranium Mine, town infrastructure, tourism and retail businesses.

Kakadu National Park
Kakadu is Australia’s largest national park. You’ll find rugged escarpments and lush rainforest with wetlands that are home to many thousaands of birds, as well as to huge crocodiles. There are natural rock art galleries up to 50,000 years old. You can find out about Aboriginal culture from traditional owners the Bininj/Mungguy people.

Jabiru
Jabiru is a clean and green township and well maintained with a lake and picnic grounds. Jabiru was purpose-built to service the mine in 1982 and was originally a closed town. The township was named after the Jabiru bird, Australia’s largest stork.

Jabiru has a range of accommodation and there is much to see and do in Kakadu. There’s a variety of tours, both by road and air and scenic cruises too. Some are run by Aboriginal people and give a good insight into their way of life and culture. In the centre of town, a small town plaza is the retail and business hub.

Most visitors come to Kakadu during the dry season. But the wet season (October to April),  is very scenic, especially by air with waterfalls flowing. See the spectacular Jim Jim Falls which drop more than 250 metres.

Experience Kakadu’s magic as the country changes in six dramatically different seasons as recognised by Kakadu's Bininj/Mungguy people. Aboriginal people enjoy the changes to the environment the weather brings. Different seasonal foods are available and the landscapes change with abundance of water.

Enjoy Kakadu and whatever season you visit, it is worth returning in the opposite season to experience a very different Kakadu.

Visit the Bowali Visitor Centre for information and maps on places to explore.

Kakadu is accessed by driving via the Arnhem Highway, off the Stuart Highway near Darwin or by following the Kakadu Highway (Natures Way) from Pine Creek. Visitors can also arrive by plane..
