MAD BASTARD

Mark Berry (MB) is known not only as a talented winemaker, but also for his wicked sense of humour.

Working under the guidance of his father, the legendary Jim Barry, Mark soon established himself as a talented practitioner He became senior winemaker in 1985 and presided over a decade of vintages in stunning style.

After a break of a few years, in 2010 Mark opened his own label. A friend jokingly said he was a “mad bastard” (it’s an expensive exercise and hard work).  Mark thought it a great name. And so MB Wines was born.

Mark happily works with some outstanding fruit on his boutique winery, home to 13 hectares of Shiraz he planted in 1998 from cuttings from the original Armagh family vineyard he helped establish in 1966.

Small parcels of grapes from local growers are bought to make limited-edition wines. Descriptions like:
2013 Siraz aromas of cedary oak, plums and a hint of cherries with flavours of French road, plum fruits and rich tannins.
Riesling is sparkling green in colour with lively lemon and lime aromas and a zesty, tangy crisp acid finish.
