ADELAIDE RIVER RAILWAY Heritage Precinct
Drop in and say G’Day. The comprehensive collections are well worth seeing.
The railway was built in the 1880s to service the Pine Creek Goldfields and Adelaide River refreshment room was a welcome stop. The old railway station has been restored. You’ll see the kitchen and displays. Outside there’s the water tower for steam trains, rolling stock and restored Sydney Williams buildings to explore.
Adelaide River played at vital role during World War11 and there’s some fascinating artefacts and displays, even one on homing pigeons. After the bombing of Darwin, much administration was conducted from here. There was a huge hospital as well as an ammunition storage at Snake Creek. Plans are afoot to connect the rail to Snake Creek.
There’s a display on explorers with John Mcdouall Stuart and one of the best exhibits on the Overland Telegraph Line.
You can walk through a typical Territory House built in the 1950s. With no air conditioning, the style was innovative.
Just up a small rise, a lake with waterlilies and seating is a good place to take your lunch or thermos of coffee.
All work has been achieved by volunteers.
A Donation of $2 for entry is requested.
