THE FLYING SCOTSMAN TOURS AUSTRALIA

In October 1988 the locomotive arrived in Australia for the bicentenary celebrations as a central attraction in the Aus Steam '88 festival. During the year she travelled more than 45,000 kms concluding with a return transcontinental run from Sydney to Perth via Alice Springs in which she travelled on the recently completed rail across Australia.

The Flying Scotsman is renowned for setting two world records by becoming the first steam locomotive to reach 100 miles per hour (160.9 km/h) on 30 November 1934, and later for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive of 422 miles (679 km) on 8 August 1989.
