The Oodnadatta Track and the Stuart Highway

THE PEBBLES (KUNJARRA)

The boulders are in all shapes and sizes and look as if they have been arranged randomly on the hillside.

The weathering of time has set them into the landscape and small gum trees and clumps of spinifex grass provide a habitat for birds and lizards.

A winding path wends its way around the hillside completing the picturesque setting.

At one time there were rock wallabies there, but it is unclear if they still live at Kunjarra.

It’s an ideal spot for a picnic – have a break and stretch your legs.

There are campgrounds, interpretive signage and toilets. It is very peaceful  and quiet.

Known to the local Warumungu Aboriginal people as Kunjarra, The Pebbles are a sacred site and women’s dancing place for the Munga Munga Dreaming.

One of the best times to photograph these unique formations is at sunrise and at sunset.

Six kms of good unsealed road leads to the site from the Stuart Highway. It is usually suitable for conventional two wheel drive vehicles and caravans.
