ALICE SPRINGS SCHOOL OF THE AIR

Covering 1.3 million square kms and with 130 students, the School of the Air brings the classroom into the homes of children in Outback Australia. With satellite technology, students can interact with their teacher and classmates as far as 1200kms away.

In earlier days children learnt their lessons at home from their mother or governess. Some were sent away to boarding schools.

By the 1940s the success of the Traeger pedal radio in remote areas, used by the Royal Flying Doctor Service, gave Adelaide Miethke an inspiration. She envisaged a school where children in the Ouback could have communication with their teachers.

In 1951 the Alice Springs School of the Air was established. Lessons were broadcast from the teacher one way only, but it wasn’t long before the children were able to participate in question and answer time.

Today children enjoy interactive classes live via the internet. Events bringing students together in Alice Springs four times a year are also included on the school calendar.

At our Visitor Centre you can watch a classroom in action. And find about the history and world class innovations in the World’s Largest Classroom.

Open every day Mon to Sat 8.30 to 4.30, Sun and Public Holidays 1.30 to 4.30.
Last entry 4pm. Closed Good Friday and Christmas Day to New Years Day.
