AKHIRA ALPACA STUD AND SHOP

Akhira is located on our farm just past Birdwood on the main road to Mount Pleasant where we have been breeding Alpacas for many years. Alpaca fibre is lightweight with high thermal efficiency. Garments have a luxurious, soft silky feel.

Our on-farm shop stocks a large range of beautiful Australian and imported knitwear, coats, jackets, scarves, hats and other garments that suit all seasons.
Also rugs, fleeces and knitting yarns.

Alpacas are native to South America where they were farmed for thousands of years by the civilisations who prospered on the high Andean Plateau, prior to the arrival of the Spanish.

At altitudes of 4000–5000 metres above sea level, the climate conditions are extreme and range from subzero temperatures with blizzards to fierce burning heat with high ultraviolet levels. Evolving in such harsh conditions, Alpacas developed superb insulating coats, known to the native people as “The Fibre of the Gods”.

Akhira is on an historic property, established around 1870 by Patrick Hynes and his wife Mary Ann. With gold discovered in the Birdwood area in 1871, the Hynes’ land proved to be very profitable and they amassed a considerable fortune.

Some of the other historic buildings constructed by Hynes during the 1870s include the Blumberg (now Birdwood school),  Birdwood Post Office, Mount Pleasant School and the Palmer Gaol.

Akhira Alpaca Stud breeds and sells both Huacaya and Suri Alpacas of Peruvian, Bolivian, Chilean and Australian bred backgrounds. Males available at stud are all of a very high quality. Matings carry a live cria guarantee and may be performed on your property or ours.  With almost 40 years in the stud stock industry, we offer you friendly advice on Alpacas with no obligation.

Akhira offer a complete Artificial Insemination service.

Bengal Cats – Akhira was the first South Australian breeder of the beautiful Bengal Cat. These majestic spotted or marbled cats are a derivative of the endangered Asian Leopard Cat. They have the look of the wild, but are loveable with a gentle nature.
