NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM
And the Semaphore Steam Railway
Take a journey into history at the National Railway Museum, Australia's largest railway museum. Over 100 exhibits representi state, Commonwealth and private operators on the three major rail gauges used in Australia. See over 100 steam and diesel engines, carriages, and freight wagons within two huge pavilions and the 1870s goods shed.
Interactive and educational displays include safe operating practices, the role of Women in Railways, and the famous Tea and Sugar train that served isolated railway families living in tiny settlements on the Nullarbor.
Explore the Woodville signal cabin, view the model railway, chart the growth and decline of railways in South Australia on the electronic map, operate level crossing warning bells and flash lights. Visitors can enter the cabs of giant steam engines. Transport yourselves back to another era as you walk through elegant carriages.
The SAR exhibits are gems – see early (1880s) engines, the massive 504 built in 1926 to haul The Overland, Australia’s first mainline diesel no 900 (1951), and 409 – the narrow gauge massive Beyer Garratt built mainly to haul Broken Hill ore traffic.
Passenger cars include hard-seat 2nd class wonders, sleeping cars, dining cars and even a Vice-Regal car. There’s the famous Bluebird rail car, the Red Hen suburban car and Budd rail car used for services to Maree, Woomera and Whyalla. Also BHP, Electricity Trust of SA and Silverton Railway exhibits.
