MOUNT LAURA HOMESTEAD MUSEUM

Mount Laura Homestead Museum offers a snapshot of the early days of Whyalla. The museum is centred around the Homestead built in 1922 on the then sheep station.

Gay Street Cottage (1914) is typical of the cottages built by BHP for their employees and furnished to represent the living conditions of the era.


Barber Horse Drawn Vehicle Shed Horses were essential to the development of the region. Wagons, traps, jinkers and more are displayed. All iron ore was carted from the mine in wagons drawn by horses or bullocks prior to the tramway built in 1901.

Telecommunications Museum Exhibits from the Overland Telegraph from Port Augusta and Darwin completed in 1872 and the East West Telegraph connecting Perth to Adelaide in 1877 that passed through Whyalla. Displays include modern day satelite communications.

Steam Train and Ore Truck The locomotive built in 1891 was used to haul iron ore from Iron Knob to Whyalla.


Stationery Engine Museum Contains over 60 stationery engines.

You can see Whyalla’s first Police Lockup, the Blacksmith Shop and numerous relics from the bygone era. Hate going to the dentist? Imagine a drill powered by foot pump!
