AUSTRALIAN AVIATION HERITAGE CENTRE
FROM SPITFIRE TO B52 BOMBER
The Australian Aviation Heritage Centre has an impressive presentation of aircraft and displays depicting the Territory’s involvement in aviation, both civil and military, from the early pioneers and record breakers through World War II and the jet age. The Centre is one of the major aviation museums in Australia.
A massive B-52 bomber takes centre stage. It is on permanent loan from the United States Air Force and is one of only two on public display in the world outside the USA.
The Australian Aviation Heritage Centre is easy to find on the Stuart Highway just 10 kms from the city centre. It was opened in 1990 and built by the Northern Territory Government – the largest single span building in the Territory. A new air conditioned wing with cafe and souvenir shop is a welcome addition. You can relax with a cool drink and a bite to eat.
Unique souvenirs – Aviation books, prints, videos and more. "Darwin's Airwar" by Bob Alford is available. It has been completely re-written with new material and photos. It is an invaluable source of information on the Darwin Air raids, 1942 to 1945.
