Balhannah is a small village on the Onkaparinga Highway in the Adelaide Hills between Oakbank and Verdun. There is a shopping centre in the centre of town, cafes, bakery, hotel, supermarket and several other shops. As well there are several wineries and a choice of bed and breakfast accommodation, just a stone’s throw from town.
The village grew surrounded by apple and cherry orchids and dairy farms – some are now giving way to vineyards and housing estates.
It is thought Balhannah township had its origins when James Turnbull Thomson, the owner of the section, advertised part of his land for a village. He named it Belhannah, thought after his mother and sister.
The Onkaparinga River meanders around the town. When heavy rains fall, it can quickly turn into a rushing a torrent. There is a bridge over the river and a children’s playground and tennis courts at the northern end of town. Another bridge spans the river on the road to Uraidla, the scenic route to Adelaide.
