“Adelaide’s City by the Sea”
Glenelg, on Holdfast Bay, is Adelaide’s popular beachside suburb, just 10 kms from Adelaide. Glenelg was South Australia’s first mainland settlement. There are a number of attractions on the foreshore and the beach with its white sands and calm water is a favouite spot in summer.
Glenelg's main street is host to numerous specialty shops, cafes and restaurants and has a cosmopolitan food atmosphere. Glenelg Beach is easily accessable by tram from Victoria Square in Adelaide or by driving via Anzac Highway from the City.
There is a large range of accommodation to suit all tastes.
In 1836 South Australia’s first governor, Governor Hindmarsh arrived in the HMS Buffalo with other settlers. A few days later, the ceremony, Proclaiming the Colony of South Australia, took place at the famous Old Gum Tree. It is re-enacted on Proclamation Day, the 28th December each year. A heritage walk takes in the site.
The City of Holdfast Bay, just under 14 square kilometres, comprises the suburbs of Brighton, Glenelg, Glenelg East, Glenelg North, Glenelg South, Hove, Kingston Park, North Brighton, Seacliff, part of Seacliff Park, Somerton Park and South Brighton.
