Nuriootpa

It is the largest town in the Batossa and the commercial centre, with a population of around 5,500 people.

Nuriootpa is about an hour's drive north of Adelaide at the northern end of the Barossa Valley, near the Sturt Highway.  The name of the town is thought to be the local Aboriginal word for "meeting place".

?It is home to some very famous wineries including Penfolds, Elderton, Kaesler and Wolf Blass.

Of interest is the Barossa Bushgarden, a  community project growing plants indigenous to the area and the Bush Chapel at Coulthard Reserve, a place of quiet reflection.

The peaceful North Para River meanders through town and Nuriootpa Linear Park along side the river provides a delightfully scenic walk from Coulthard Reserve to Tolley Reserve on the Barossa Valley Way.

Historic Coulthard House, opposite the police station, is the home of town founder William Coulthard. Visitors can look around this property. Under William Coultard's leadership and generosity Nuriootpa grew and prospered.

Among the impressive buidings in the Barossa Valley is the Sodiers Memorial Hall and  St Petri Lutheran Church in Nuriootpa. The church was founded at Christmas 1849 at the first service under a large gum tree.
