Tanunda is the largest town in the Barossa Valley and is surrounded by wineries. The population is around 4000. The town is famous for the fine wines of the Barossa and the superb food specialities of the region. There are a number of cafes and restaurants in the main street.
Chateau Tanunda, with its impressive buildings and grounds is a landmark and four substantial churches with their imposing spires reflect the strong religious convictions of the pioneers.
A variety of accommodation is offered ranging from motels and hotels to bed and breakfast establishments.
Several events during the year are a highlight on the calendar and include the Barossa.Gourmet Weekend – three days of delicious offerings, fine wine and activities in mid August each year.
The Barossa Vintage Festival is the Barossa’s biggest celebration of wine, food, music, art, culture and tradition. The Festival is the largest and longest running wine tourism festival in Australia. For over 60 years the Barossa Vintage Festival has showcased the rich diversity of the Barossa region.
The name of town is derived from the local Aboriginal name of a waterhole.
