Exploring Australia

Welcome to

Georgetown

Georgetown is a small town in the mid north, 196 kms from Adelaide. It has has some of the most beautiful buildings on the Horrocks Highway.

Georgetown township survey in 1869 was on a grand scale. The town was planned as a miniature Adelaide, with North, South, East and West Terraces and extended over 2235 hectares. The town flourished and some record-breaking wheat crops were grown.

After the railway line proposed to pass through Georgetown was diverted via Jamestown to Port Pirie, the prosperity of a railway town went with it and the town began to decline.

Federation Park in the centre of town has an interesting display of early agricultural equipment.
