SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM

The South Australian Museum is one of the most visited cultural institutions in Australia.

The Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery has over 3,000 items on display in a contemporary, interactive setting. It is the most comprehensive Aboriginal cultural exhibition in the world – the largest in existence.

The Pacific Cultures Gallery is the largest exhibition of Pacific material in Australia and second only to Auckland in the Southern Hemisphere.

In the Footsteps of Sir Douglas Mawson displays this famous explorer’s personal belongings, examples of his scientific work and samples from his expeditions to Antarctica and South Australia. 

The Origin Energy Fossil Gallery is home to the internationally renowned: ‘Ediacara: the origin of animals’. The gallery showcases 550 million year old fossils from the Flinders Ranges; it features the largest known fossil animal of its time, Dickinsonia rex, amongst others. The gallery also hosts the Opal Fossils of South Australia, with the stunning 120 million year old Addyman Plesiosaur opalised fossil at its centre.

The SA Museum’s new Biodiversity Gallery is being developed on the museum’s second floor. It will highlight SA’s unique biodiversity and track our nation-leading initiatives to manage climate change. The Science Centre is the first of its kind in Australia to give the public access to the Museum’s ‘behind the scenes’ scientific research. It’s also home to the Museum Archives and the Mawson Centre.

A vibrant program of temporary exhibitions showcases many other facets of South Australia including the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize: Australia’s richest art prize that celebrates natural history art.
