Meckering is a small township servicing the surrounding farmlamds. It is famous for experiencing Australia’s most severe earthquake on October 14th, 1968.
The earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale, shattered buildings and buckled railway lines. It left a deep gash on the ground about 4 km west of the town on the Highway. It can still be seen and is signposted 'Earthquake Fault Line’. Photographs of the earthquake are on display in the Cunderdin Museum.
