Fraser Range is halfway between Norseman and Balladonia. Explorers John Alexander (later to become Western Australia's premier) and his brother John were impressed with the country as they passed through whilst investigating a route between Perth and Adelaide for the overland telegraph line.
The Dempster brothers were the first settlers in the area in 1872, aided by convict labour. At that ime the area was extremely isolated – gold had not yet been discoveries that opened up much of Western Australia. Sheep were cared for by shepherds and the wool was taken by horse and cart to the Great Australian Bight and shipped to Adelaide for sale.
