In The Avon Valley
The Avon Valley is a beautiful valley with rolling hills just east of Perth encompassing the Beverley, York, Northam, Toodyay and Goomalling Shires.
The Valley comprises an area of 3600 square kms through which the Avon River flows. This picturesque meandering waterway of spring dries to a series of pools in summer and becomes a raging torrent in winter. The Avon Valley is heritage country and there is much to explore.
Beverley, a friendly rural town on the banks of the meandering Avon River was one of the first areas in Western Australia to be opened for agriculture. The town was named after Beverley in England, the home of a pioneer landholder.
The main street is of interest with building styles from Federation to Art Deco, Colonial, 60's and 70's buildings, even a Geodesic Dome. There are cafes and choices of accommodation include two hotels, farmstays and caravan park. The local farming community grow diverse products of wheat, wool, yabbies, emus, deer, olives, grapes and trees.
The Aeronautical Museum displays the “Silver Centenary” a full size biplane built by local engineering wizard Selby Ford between 1928 and 1930. Comprehensive wall displays tell the story of flight in Western Australia.
The Dead Finish Museum, originally the “Wheatsheaf Inn” houses impressive collections of a bygone era. Activities in town include Gliding, playing Bowls or Golf. The Avon Discovery Farm is a modern working farm where visitors are invited to explore the agricultural history and sustainable future. It’s a great place for a picnic, as is under the shady trees by the Avon River in town. Wildflowers in the area are a picture between June and October.
