Fishing Information

Garfish & Tommies
Good catches of medium and large garfish are caught at Point Lowly, Black Point and Whyalla Jetty using gents for bait under float.
Kingfish
Ranging in size from 3-4kg to large kingfish 20-30kg using lures or pilchards and live squid for larger fish. Black Point, Lighthouse, Sandunes. November through to March.
Snapper
Cowleds Landing has been good for the last few months. Fish up to 8.9kg have been caught. South of Whyalla is great for snapper. Get a good burley trail behind your boat and work in the trail to get the fish to come to you. Using large baits of tommies, squid, garfish on a good tide you can boat some large snapper up to 12kg.
Port Lowly produces snapper up to 15-16kg aroung the Rip and Fsh Pens – just wait and burley. They are the biggest snapper in the gulf. Best times April, May, June, July.
Whiting
In front of Mount Young by boat – keep moving until you find them. Black point, False Bay.
Best time is in winter.
Crabs
Large blue swimmer crabs can be caught off the jetty and and from the boats. you can walk out off the foreshore on low tide and rake crabs. September to April.

FISHING REPORT

Image of Ian Kilpatrick of Wyalla with a personal best kingfish of 37 kg. Ian had a livebait skipping on the surface as the boat was moved a short distance when a massive splash erupted behind the boat with the kingy nailing the bait on the surface. It was eventually landed after a hectic fight in shallow water
